Cars will run 4 at a time on the track with electronic timing.
Each car will run once on each track.
Race winners are determined by the fastest time across four runs, not by who crosses the finish line first.
Races will run by den - e.g., Bears racing Bears.
The top 3 from each Den will then race in a double-elimination Pack bracket.
Awards will be given for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each Den as well as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for the Pack.
There will a Best-In-Show award for each Den based on popular vote.
IMPORTANT:
Parent volunteers will assist with staging and racing cars. This is to keep a minimum number of hands on and around the cars and to try and prevent accidents.
If the parents doing the staging find that a car has broken, we will suspend the race for approximately 10 min to allow the car builder to repair the car. In the event the vehicle cannot be fixed in 10 min we will be forced to race without that car. There will not be time to fix it every time between races so please take the time the first time to fix it correctly. The decision to begin the race again will be made by the Cubmaster, Pinewood Chair and the scout’s Den Leader. All decisions are final.
Please reach out to your den leader or pack leadership if you have any questions.
All scout-run cars must be newly constructed for the current year’s event. No previously run car can compete. Siblings and parents may use cars that have competed previously.
ALL 4 WHEELS MUST TOUCH THE RACETRACK SURFACE WHEN INSPECTED AT CHECK-IN! 3-WHEELING IS NOT ALLOWED!
Please do not place any numbers on your car ahead of check-in.
Sibling and parent races will follow at the end of the den races. Sibling cars must follow den rules.
We will have a Parent race after the Pack finals. New for the year: Parent cars will compete in our new OUTLAW CLASS! Any scout or sibling that wants to enter an additional car in Outlaw Class (not the car they competed with for the Pack races), is welcome to do so.
**NOTE** All cars will be left with the scout leaders on Friday night at check-in. You will not be able to take your car home that evening to continue working on it.
Construction: Cars shall be constructed using Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby parts. The Official Grand Prix wheels (including the BSA colored wheel kits) shall be mounted on the Grand Prix axle nails. The axle nails shall be firmly affixed to the wood block. The entire car must sit behind the starting line (pin) on the track. Details such as Steering Wheel, Driver, Decals, Painting, and Interior Details are permitted and must be firmly attached. Paint and/or glue must be dry before a car can race. Cars generating loose debris on the track may be subject to disqualification. Again, and this is important: NO THREE WHEELING IS ALLOWED ON SCOUT-RUN CARS
Suspension: The car may not ride on any type of springs or suspension.
Starting/Propulsion Aids: The car must be free-wheeling with no starting devices or aided propulsion.
Length: Car cannot be more than 7 inches long. Cars can be shorter than this.
Width: Car cannot be more than 2 3/4 inches wide.
Height: Car cannot be more than 4 1/2 inches tall.
Weight: Finished car cannot weigh more than 5 ounces. The weight shown on the official scales during the pre-race inspection is final. To increase the car's weight, add wood, plastic or metal only. Weights shall be passive (non-moveable, non-magnetic, non-electric, etc.). For safety reasons, use of mercury is prohibited. Bottom mounted weights must be recessed in the car as not to come in contact with the stop zone of the track and must meet ground clearance requirements (3/8 inch) and be free of sharp edges.
Wheel Placement: The car body must be at least 1 3/4 inches wide at the axles. It must clear the ground by at least 3/8 inch. If desired, you may change the wheelbase (distance between front and rear axles).
Wheels and Axles: Only official Scout Grand Prix wheels and axles can be used. Wheels may be lightly sanded to remove the molding seam on the tread and the hub may be trued. Tread “bumps” must still be visible on the wheel shoulder. Axles may be de-burred and polished to reduce friction. Axles may also be bent. No other changes to axles or wheels are allowed. You may not use hubcaps, washers, inserts, sleeves, bearings or coatings.
Lubrication: Only dry powdered lubricants, such as graphite, may be used. Lubricant must not leave any residue on the track. No graphite may be applied after car inspection.
Race Markings: Allowances should be made for a 1/2 inch number label applied to the top of the car, near the nose, on race day for identification.
Participants can use cars that have previously competed.
